Introduction

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located in Tanzania, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above sea level, making it the second highest peak in the country. Situated within Arusha National Park, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is known for its distinctive horseshoe-shaped crater and rich biodiversity. The mountain’s vegetation zones range from lowland forests, home to elephants and buffaloes, to alpine meadows.

Mount Meru is culturally significant to the local Meru and Maasai communities and is considered sacred. It is a popular trekking destination, often used for acclimatization by climbers preparing to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. The primary trekking route, the Momella Route, offers diverse ecosystems and stunning views, making it a favorite among adventure enthusiasts.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Preparation

Morning: Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania.Afternoon: Transfer to Arusha National Park, where you will receive a briefing from your guide and check your gear.Evening: Overnight stay at a lodge or campsite near the park, preparing for the trek.

Day 2: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) to 2,514 meters (8,248 feet)Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)Duration: 4-6 hoursMorning: Begin the trek from Momella Gate with a gradual ascent through grasslands, possibly spotting wildlife like giraffes and buffaloes.Afternoon: Continue trekking through the montane forest, home to various bird species.Evening: Arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,514 meters (8,248 feet) to 3,570 meters (11,712 feet)Distance: 8 km (5 miles)Duration: 3-5 hoursMorning: Trek through lush montane forests, transitioning into heather and moorland zones.Afternoon: Arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch, then take an optional short hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters / 12,533 feet) for acclimatization and stunning views.Evening: Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (Summit) and Back to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 3,570 meters (11,712 feet) to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) (summit), then back to 2,514 meters (8,248 feet)Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles) to the summit, 13 km (8 miles) descentDuration: 10-14 hours totalMidnight: Start the summit attempt around midnight to reach the peak by sunrise. The ascent is steep and passes through Rhino Point and Cobra Point.Sunrise: Reach Socialist Peak for breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.Morning: Descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and breakfast.Afternoon: Continue descending to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

Morning: Depending on your schedule, you can depart from Arusha or extend your stay to explore more of Tanzania, such as a safari in the Serengeti or a visit to Zanzibar.
